Step By Step Wire Jewelry Tutorial: Layered Coiling Crystal Pearl Earrings

This step by step guide illustrates the steps and procedures to compose a pair earrings with a 22ga and 26ga dead-soft wires, decorated by metal beads, Swarovski crystal and Fresh Water Pearl using layer-coiling technique.   Tools needed for this project:
  • Round nose pliers
  • Flat nose pliers
Materials to produce a pair of Layer-Coiled Earring:
  • 2 x 22ga dead-soft-wire, 3″ each (for base)
  • 2 x 26ga dead-soft-wries, 2.5ft long each (for coiling)
  • 22 x 3mm meal beads
  • 10 x 4mm Swarovski Crystal Bacon beads
  • 2 x Ear wires

Step 1: Creating Earring Base

Use 22 gauge wires to create a simple circle with 1.5cm diameter. This can be achieved by wrapping it around a wooden dowel or a thick knitting needle that has 1.5cm long’s diameter. Leave a tail of approximately 0.5” for the earring loop
Create the loops by using the round nose pliers. Note that the direction of the loop and the circle is important, the overlap should remain to your left if you are right handed, and vice versa. This is because you will need to hold the remainder to ensure its roundness in the later steps when you start to coil. NOTE: This tutorial was my first jewelry tutorial, as I became more skilful I would suggest to create a mirrored direction of loops so you can create a pair of symmetrical earrings.
Cut a 2.5 ft long 26ga dead-soft wire and attach the wire to the left of the loop (depending on the placement of the remainder wire from Step 2) by coiling it around the circle two or three times. In this project we are working in clockwise direction.
Now you may start coiling the base wire with the thin wire, remember to do a check point every now and then to ensure its tidiness. Best practice will be pushing the wire to the left to minimize the gap between each coil, as shown in the picture.

Continue coiling the base
We are now reaching the end of the coiling the base process. Notice that we are about to reach the point where the remaining wire overlapped with the base wire portion. Continue to coil and remember to minimize the gap between each coil.
Continue to coil until you reach the overlapped portion. Please push the wire towards left to minimize the gap between wires to ensure its tidiness.
Coil the overlapped point with extra care; make sure you gently pull and tighten the wire on your first coiling process on the overlapped point to prevent it from slipping out later.

Gently pull and tighten your wire upon each coiling process.
You will eventually reach the starting point of the thin wires. Just continue to coil towards the direction to the earring loop. 
Continue to coil until you coil passed the earring loop, then stop.

Step 2: Attaching First Layer Beads

Slip in a 3mm metal bead, push the thin wires against the back of the base, take the wire back through the gap between the thin wire and the base (as shown in the above picture) to form a loop. Note: Remember to leave some wire space on the left of the bead, this is so that you have room to do a perfect closure at the later step. 
Gently pull and tighten the thin wire. 
Slip in the second 3mm metal bead, push the thin wires against the back of the base, take the wire back through the gap between the thin wire and the base (as shown in the above picture) to form a loop, then gently pull and tighten the wire. 
Slip in the third 3mm metal bead, push the thin wires against the back of the base, take the wire back through the gap between the thin wire and the base (as shown in the above picture) to form a loop, then gently pull and tighten the wire. 
Slip in the forth 3mm metal bead, push the thin wires against the back of the base, take the wire back through the gap between the thin wire and the base (as shown in the above picture) to form a loop, then gently pull and tighten the wire. 
Slip in the fifth 3mm metal bead, push the thin wires against the back of the base, take the wire back through the gap between the thin wire and the base (as shown in the above picture) to form a loop, then gently pull and tighten the wire. 
Slip in the sixth 3mm metal bead, push the thin wires against the back of the base, take the wire back through the gap between the thin wire and the base (as shown in the above picture) to form a loop, then gently pull and tighten the wire.

Slip in the seventh 3mm metal bead, push the thin wires against the back of the base, take the wire back through the gap between the thin wire and the base (as shown in the picture) to form a loop, then gently pull and tighten the wire. 
Slip in the eighth 3mm metal bead, push the thin wires against the back of the base, take the wire back through the gap between the thin wire and the base (as shown in the picture) to form a loop, then gently pull and tighten the wire. 
Slip in the ninth 3mm metal bead, push the thin wires against the back of the base, take the wire back through the gap between the thin wire and the base (as shown in the picture) to form a loop, then gently pull and tighten the wire. 
Slip in the tenth 3mm metal bead, push the thin wires against the back of the base, take the wire back through the gap between the thin wire and the base (as shown in the above picture) to form a loop, then gently pull and tighten the wire.  Note: if there’s no more room for you to attach the 11th 3mm metal beads, stop now and proceed to the next step without attaching the 11th bead. 
Slip in the eleventh 3mm metal bead, push the thin wires against the back of the base at the 1st metal bead, Note: DO NOT form any loop NOR tighten the wire at this point. 
Take the wire back through the gap between the thin wire and the base behind the first metal bead (as shown in the picture) to form a loop. 
Gently pull and tighten the wire and get ready to proceed to the second layer of coiling.

Step 3: Attaching Second Layer Beads

Slip in the first 4mm crystal bead; place the thin wires against the back of the base, it should land between the 2nd and the 3rd metal bead. 
Bring the wire slip thru the space between the 2nd and 3rd bead. Please proceed to next step for the clearer view of it.
Bring the wire slip thru the space between the 2nd and 3rd bead to form an inner loop, and then gently pull and tighten the wires.

Slip in the second 4mm crystal bead; place the thin wires against the back of the base, it should land between the 4th and the 5th metal bead. 
Bring the wire slip thru the space between the 4th and the 5th bead. Please proceed to next step for the clearer view of it. 
Bring the wire slip thru the space between the 4th and the 5th bead to form an internal loop, and then gently pull and tighten the wires. 
Slip in the third 4mm crystal bead; place the thin wires against the back of the base, it should land between the 6th and the 7th metal bead. 
Bring the wire slip thru the space between the 6th and the 7th bead. Please proceed to next step for the clearer view of it. 
Bring the wire slip thru the space between the 6th and the 7th bead to form an internal loop, and then gently pull and tighten the wires.

Slip in the forth 4mm crystal bead; place the thin wires against the back of the base, it should land between the 8th and the 9th metal bead. 
Bring the wire to slid thru the space between the 8th and the 9th bead. Please proceed to next step for the clearer view of it. 
Bring the wire slip thru the space between the 8th and the 9th bead to form an internal loop, and then gently pull and tighten the wires.

Slip in the fifth 4mm crystal bead; place the thin wires against the back of the base, it should land between the 10th and the 11th metal bead. 
Bring the wire slip thru the space between the 10th and the 11th bead. Please proceed to next step for the clearer view of it. 
Bring the wire slip thru the space between the 10th and the 11th bead to form an internal loop, and then gently pull and tighten the wires.

Note: Notice that there will be a gap between the fifth crystal bead and first crystal bead. This chapter outlined the steps to minimize the gap . till here
Bring the wire to slid thru the space between the beginning of the second layer’s wire and the 1st crystal bead. 
View from the top. Observe the wire should just slip right thru at the space between the beginnings of second layer’s wire and first crystal bead.
Gently bring the wire back to the earring’s front, then slip in a 4mm Freshwater pearl as focal.

Step 4: Attach Focal Bead

Gently bring the wire back to the behind of earring; and then gently pull and tighten the wire while leaving the freshwater pearl focal bead in the front.

Bring the wire to slip thru the space between the 5th and the 6th metal bead to form a loop, and then gently pull and tighten the wire. 
Gently pull and tighten the wire. Repeat previous two steps few more times for extra security. 
Bring the wire to the front of the earrings and trim away the extra wires closely. Above picture shows the nicely trimmed Layer-Coiled CrystalPearls Earring.
